Christiana Supports Historic Pension Reform
HARRISBURG – Rep. Jim Christiana (R-Beaver/Washington) today issued the following statement after voting in support of legislation to reform Pennsylvania’s two public pension systems:
“Our current retirement plans are driving the Commonwealth to bankruptcy, eroding funding for important programs that help our students and seniors and stall economic growth. This legislation is long overdue and brings our pension systems in line with retirement plans offered in the real world.
“Our shared goal for a more prosperous future in Pennsylvania cannot be realized without short- and long-term solutions. This plan is certainly not a cure-all, but it represents a historic step toward ensuring our current state employees, teachers and retirees receive the benefits they were promised.
“Our hard-working taxpayers have to focus on their own retirement. They shouldn’t have to worry about funding each and every state employee’s retirement as well.”
Senate Bill 1 now moves to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.
