Rader Supports Historic Pension Reform
HARRISBURG – Rep. Jack Rader (R-Monroe) issued the following statement after the House voted overwhelmingly to pass Senate Bill 1, which would reform the state’s public pension systems:
“
Senate Bill 1 represents the most substantial effort to address our state’s broken public pension systems in decades. I supported this bill because it is a step in the right direction. We must address the unfunded pension liability that has been driving Pennsylvania’s serious financial woes. This bill shifts the risk from taxpayers and moves new state employees and teachers into defined contribution plans that more closely align with retirement plans found in the private sector.
“The benefits of current retirees and current employees are not compromised, which was a non-negotiable condition for me to support this bill. We need to do more to ensure our public pension system remains viable for decades to come, but today’s action should mark the first of many steps by the Legislature to improve the financial health of the Commonwealth.”
