Nesbit Says Restart to PA Budget Process is Good First Step
HARRISBURG – With an eye toward accountability to the taxpayers, Rep. Tedd Nesbit (R-Mercer/Butler) said today that he is pleased with some portions of the governor’s 2017-18 state budget proposal that seeks to refocus the way government operates.
“As a strong fiscal conservative, I think the governor is taking a good step toward streamlining services and programs and putting the taxpayer first,” Nesbit said. “It has been no secret that passing a balanced, pro-taxpayer budget will be one with difficult choices. Budgeting is all about priorities, and it appears as though the governor is finally listening to the priorities of the people of Pennsylvania.”
The $32.34 billion budget proposal, as outlined by the governor, is balanced, but without broad-based increases in sales and income taxes.
The proposal contains billions in potential cost-savings, including two main consolidations in state government – a merger of the departments of Human Services, Health, Aging and Drug and Alcohol Programs into a Department of Health and Human Services; and a new Department of Criminal Justice, which seeks to combine the Department of Corrections with the Board of Probation and Parole.
“As someone with experience in the criminal justice system and a member of the House Judiciary Committee, I will be closely reviewing the combination of parole, probation and corrections services to make sure public safety remains paramount,” Nesbit added. “If there is one thing I’ve learned during my short time in Harrisburg, it’s that government must refocus its mission and restart the budget process to one that works. Today’s budget proposal is a good start in making that happen.”
