Mizgorski’s Legislation to Reopen Barber Shops and Hair Salons in PA Passes House
HARRISBURG – Today, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed legislation authored by Rep. Lori Mizgorski (R-Allegheny) that would issue a waiver to the governor’s COVID-19 Business Closure to allow barber shops and hair salons the option to open their doors and provide services.
“Thank you to my colleagues for passing this commonsense legislation,” said Mizgorski. “For those individuals who are in good health and have low risk, the opportunity to work to earn a living is essential. Personal grooming and good hygiene are essential. Allowing people to do the simples things in life with some modification is essential. That is why I introduced this legislation.”
Mizgorski’s bill will ensure that barber shops and hair salons institute proper mitigation techniques, or face closure until they are able to comply.
Since introducing this legislation in April, salon owners and hairstylist from around the state have contacted Mizgorski, stating they are ready and willing to serve their clients with increased safety measures such as providing personal protective equipment for employees, increasing time for sanitation procedures and hand-washing, and providing service by appointment only.
“Barbers and hair stylists are licensed professionals who are trained in methods of infection control. These professionals have existing sanitation procedures in place that can be modified, enabling them to adhere to guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” continued Mizgorski. “We must trust them with the ability to make good decisions in order to protect themselves, their loved ones, their clients and the most vulnerable of our society.”
House Bill 2459 now goes to the Senate for consideration.
