Responsible, Short-Term Budget is the Smart Approach in These Trying Times, Says Toohil
HARRISBURG – Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) this week joined a majority of her House colleagues in passing a five-month, short-term state budget proposal. The $25.8 billion spending plan, which would fully fund basic and higher education for the 2020-21 school year and necessary health and human services programs, was passed by the Senate today and sent to the governor’s desk.
Toohil issued the following statement regarding the budget proposal:
“The House passed a responsible, short-term state budget that will take us through November. We intend to work on a second spending plan for the remaining seven months later this year.
“The $25.8 billion proposal keeps spending at the same level it was during the 2019-20 Fiscal Year and does not include any broad-based tax increases. The budget also provides a full 12 months of education funding so schools can plan accordingly and provide the resources students will need when they return to the classroom.
“Due to the uncertainty of state revenues resulting from the COVID-19 health crisis, we felt this was the smart approach to take as we efficiently manage taxpayer dollars during these trying times.”
