Kaufer: Passing a Short-Term Budget Shows Needed Fiscal Restraint
HARRISBURG – Today, the governor signed into law a five-month budget which allows for preK-12 education, along with higher education, to be fully funded for the entirety of the 2020-21 school year, along with fully funding our state debt and needed health and human services programs that have been assisting unemployed Pennsylvanians.
Rep. Aaron Kaufer (R-Luzerne) believes that the fiscal restraint shown in this short-term budget is necessary as Pennsylvania continues to move forward and assess the major economic impacts COVID-19 has caused.
“With Pennsylvania’s revenue intake experiencing a major decline, it was important that we approached our state budget in the most fiscally responsible manner,” said Kaufer. “Education and the health and well-being of our residents remained a priority in our budgetary decisions, which is why our schools, and health and human services programs, and state debt were the primary recipients of budget funding. It is difficult to distribute additional funds without having all the financial data available at this time. We will be able to better assess our remaining budget once more data is gathered in the coming months.”
