Providing PPE to Long-Term Care Facilities Focus of House Aging and Older Adult Services Committee Meeting, Says Day
6/18/2020
HARRISBURG – Today, Chairman Gary Day (R-Lehigh/Berks) led an informational meeting for the House Aging and Older Adult Services Committee highlighting the gathering and distribution of personal protective equipment (PPE) for Pennsylvania long-term care facilities during the COVID-19 health crisis.

“Today’s discussions truly highlighted the discrepancies our long-term care facilities experienced throughout this pandemic as they received damaged, unusable PPE or did not even receive crucial PPE at all,” said Day. “The delays in these facilities receiving usable PPE cost them greatly as the virus had already rapidly spread by the time the safety equipment actually arrived…weeks later. It is inexcusable that our most vulnerable residents have suffered the greatest loss during this pandemic. As we continue to move forward through this crisis, I will continue to advocate for these elderly men and women and the facilities they rely on and ensure they receive life-saving equipment on time.”

Testifiers for this meeting included:

Mark Giuffre, vice president of Public Affairs, UPS – Global Freight Forwarding; Brian Winter, director of Enterprise Accounts, UPS – Global Freight Forwarding; Dr. Daniel Haimowitz, MD, private practice, Internal Medicine/Geriatrics, multi-facility medical director; and Adam Marles, president and CEO, LeadingAge PA.

On Monday, June 22, in 205 Ryan Office Building, the committee will be convening to consider and vote on House Bill 1930, sponsored by Rep. Tim Hennessey (R- Chester/Montgomery). This legislation would provide a refinement of employment bans for individuals convicted of certain crimes, addressing the Peake v. Commonwealth decision in 2015. Additionally it would require financial institutions in the Commonwealth to include in their employee training programs specific training in recognizing signs of potential financial abuse of an older adult, and the process to make an abuse report, in accordance with the Older Adults Protective Services Act.
