Governor’s Veto of Sports Spectator Bill Upheld by House, Struzzi Expresses Disappointment
HARRISBURG – State Rep. Jim Struzzi (R-Indiana) today announced that the House of Representatives has failed to overturn the governor’s veto of
House Bill 2787, which would allow decisions regarding school sports and spectators to be made by local school districts rather than by statewide mandate. The motion failed with a vote of 130-71, short of the 2/3 majority needed to overturn.
“I am very disappointed to see some of my colleagues in the House revert to partisanship, going back on their commitment to our students and families after many of them voted to pass this bill just a short time ago. The people of Pennsylvania, through their elected representatives, have made it abundantly clear that they think this decision should be left up to each school district,” said Struzzi. “For many of these students in their senior year, these will be the last games they play – their last times putting on a uniform for the schools, teams and sports that mean so much to them. By choosing to uphold this veto, this experience is severely lessened for the student athletes and their families. These children deserve to look up into the stands to see the love and support from their families while on the field. Despite this setback, I will continue fighting to give control back to our communities, where it belongs.”
House Bill 2787 was vetoed by the governor on Monday, Sept. 21, after being passed by the General Assembly. The House of Representatives and the Senate voted to pass the bill 155-47 and 39-11, respectively.
