Metzgar Votes to Terminate Governor’s Emergency Powers
HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania House of Representatives voted today to approve
House Resolution 106, which would fully terminate the COVID-19 disaster emergency declaration in Pennsylvania.
Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford) issued the following statement in response:
“On May 18 the people of Pennsylvania made their voice heard, loud and clear, saying they want to see greater checks and balances in the management of statewide emergencies. Now that the results of that election have been certified, I’m proud that we have honored our pledge to carry out the will of the people and provide those checks and balances.
“The governor’s disaster emergency declaration has wreaked havoc on Pennsylvania’s economy, allowing some businesses to operate while shuttering others seemingly at random. Vulnerable senior citizens were forced back into nursing homes, where many of them contracted COVID-19, and were unable to see their families during their final days.
“In light of the extensive mismanagement we’ve seen over the last year and a half, it’s high time we return the power of government to where it belongs—with the people.”
Legislative avenues are being explored to maintain certain portions of the declaration, including suspension of regulations.
The resolution will now go to the Senate for consideration.
