Voting Rights Protection Act Heads to Governor’s Desk
HARRISBURG – In response to the Senate approving the Voting Rights Protection Act (
House Bill 1300), Rep. Jeff Wheeland (R-Lycoming) issued the following statement:
“I applaud the Senate approving the Voting Rights Protection Act and now call on the governor to sign the bill, or not to sign it and allow the bill to become law without his signature. The majority of Pennsylvanians agree with what is in this bill, which would increase security on our elections all while making it easier for people to vote.
“The Voting Rights Protection Act ensures no voter would be disenfranchised by giving all voters an enhanced durable, scannable voter registration identification cards, much like the identification cards currently issued to voters. In addition, voters may use other identification cards, such as a driver’s license. Statistics from the Department of Transportation show 9 million Pennsylvanians have a driver’s license.”
“As a member of the House State Government Committee, I sat through the months-long election process hearings held from January through April. The issues brought to us by local and state election, including officials from other states, as well as stakeholders and experts, are all addressed in this comprehensive legislation. Trust must be restored to the election process and this bill stands to accomplish that mission.”
