Stephens Legislation to Rename Section of County Line Road for Horsham’s Jim Doherty Passes House
HARRISBURG—Legislation sponsored by Rep. Todd Stephens (R-Montgomery) to honor U.S. Air Force Maj. James Doherty, who became a leader in Horsham, has passed the House and will be sent to Gov. Tom Wolf for his signature.
House Bill 1560, co-sponsored with Rep. Meghan Schroeder (R-Bucks), would name a section of County Line Road, from Meetinghouse Road to Blair Mill Road, as the U.S. Air Force Major James Doherty Memorial Highway. Doherty passed away in 2021.
“The Greatest Generation will be remembered not only for answering the call to duty during World War II, but for returning home to serve and build their communities and create the thriving towns that flourished throughout our Commonwealth,” Stephens said. “So it was with Jim Doherty.”
Doherty joined the United States Air Force in 1943, which led to a 13-year commitment. He became a bomber pilot at the age of 18 and served in both the European and Pacific Theaters as a second lieutenant.
On returning to Pennsylvania, Doherty made Horsham his home and served his community in many roles, including as a member of Horsham Township Council. He also guided young lives through the Horsham Little League and demonstrated a commitment to keeping Horsham pristine and environmentally safe through the Horsham Water and Sewer Authority, the Horsham Township Parks and Recreation Board, the Horsham Township Environmental Advisory Board, and Horsham Township Vacancy Board.
Doherty also served as a member of the Hatboro-Horsham School District Board of Directors for 20 years, receiving many awards throughout his service.
“In the future, as families drive along this roadway, children will ask who Jim Doherty was and they’ll learn the true meaning of service to one’s country and community,” Stephens said. “That is the legacy of U.S. Air Force Maj. James Doherty.”
