Speaker Announces Special Elections for 174th, 191st and 195th Legislative Districts in Philadelphia and Delaware Counties
6/11/2015
HARRISBURG – Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny County) today ordered three special elections be held on Tuesday, Aug. 11, to fill the vacant seats in the 174th Legislative District in Philadelphia; the 191st Legislative District in Philadelphia and Delaware counties; and the 195th Legislative District in Philadelphia.

Turzai filed each writ of election, the formal document setting the date of a special election, with the Department of State. Copies of the writs also are being filed with the board of elections for each affected county (Delaware and Philadelphia).

The vacancies were created by the resignations of former Reps. John Sabatina (D-174th District, Philadelphia) on June 9; Ron Waters (D-191st District, Delaware/Philadelphia) on June 1; and Michelle Brownlee (D-195th District, Philadelphia) on June 8.

Candidates for the office will be selected by a process designated by their respective political parties, and the winner of the special elections will take office after the results are certified.

District offices of these former members will remain open under supervision of the House to assist constituents with issues or problems, and continue constituent inquiries already in progress. The offices will remain until new representatives take office and decide how to manage the district.
