Boback on Budget Address: “Let’s see some details”
HARRISBURG – State Rep. Karen Boback (R-Lackawanna/Wyoming/Luzerne) issued the following statement in reaction to Gov. Tom Wolf’s budget proposal for the 2019-20 fiscal year:
“The first word that comes to mind when describing the governor’s budget address is ambitious. There is a lot to like about what he is proposing to accomplish, particularly in the area of workforce development. While the rate of unemployment is low, we are anticipating a wave of job openings in the trades and need to do all we can to prepare workers to fill those vacancies.
“As a former educator, I can appreciate what would be a record investment in public education. I also appreciate his recognition of my Alma Mater, Misericordia University, for their exemplary program entitled ‘Women with Children.’ Education provides a key to combatting so many of society’s ills. Rather than rely on school property taxes, however, I feel it is incumbent upon us as a commonwealth to provide sufficient funding.
“Pennsylvania is on good economic footing right now and must stay that course if we wish to maintain and improve upon that status. As a former member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’ve learned to focus on the ‘price tag’ that goes along with proposals.
“I need to see some details of how the governor’s spending plan will be paid for before I determine which parts I would endorse.”
Questions about this or any legislative issue should be directed to Boback’s Dallas district office at (570) 675-6000 or her Tunkhannock office at (570) 836-4777.
