Topper Bill to Prohibit Tax Dollars from Being Used for Gender Reassignment Surgery Passed by House Committee
HARRISBURG – Legislation by Rep. Jesse Topper (R-Bedford/Franklin/Fulton) to prohibit the use of taxpayer dollars to be used to provide gender reassignment surgery under government-funded medical assistance programs was passed by the House Health Committee on Monday.
“With limited financial resources, as well as prominent studies and research in health and psychiatry fields acknowledging that these services are not medically necessary, and in many cases very harmful, we must ensure tax dollars are not used in these instances,” Topper said.
Under Topper’s
House Bill 1933, tax dollars would not be used for gender or sex reassignment surgery and gender or sex transition services under the Medical Assistance program and the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
The legislation would include a prohibition of using funds for physician’s services, inpatient and outpatient hospital services, prescribed drugs or counseling services related to gender reassignment surgeries and services.
The bill now goes to the full House for a vote.
