Kaufer’s Bill to Help Opioid Crisis, Signed by Governor as Act 40 of 2017
10/31/2017
HARRISBURG – Rep. Aaron Kaufer’s (R-Luzerne) House Bill 118, which establishes the Emergency Drug and Alcohol Detoxification Program, was recently signed into law as Act 40 of 2017.

Act 40 of 2017 encourages existing health care facilities to convert beds to provide medically supervised detoxification to help ensure emergency drug and alcohol detoxification services are available in community hospitals.

“There has been a shortage of detoxification beds within our state,” Kaufer explained. “When people overdose and receive care, they’re then sent home, rather than staying in a supervised setting where treatment can begin immediately. This law will now provide a safe and helpful environment for patients to begin the next step of their recovery.”
