– Tasked with the imperative job of seeing Pennsylvanian’s dairy industry grow and thrive into the next decade, the recently established Pennsylvania Dairy Future Commission
added two additional members who both bring multi-generational, on-the-farm experience to the commission.
“The dairy industry is a crucial piece of the culture, economy and history of central Pennsylvania,” House Majority Leader Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster County) said. “Adding the knowledge, experience and passion for the industry that both Lisa and Doug have will be a major benefit to the commission and the state.”
The two commission members were both appointed by Cutler. They are:
• Lisa Graybeal, Lancaster County.
o Graybeal grew up on her family’s dairy farm in southern Lancaster County. It was established by her grandparents in 1942. She graduated from Northeastern University in Boston with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and worked as a newspaper reporter for 10 years before returning to the family farm. She and her brother are the third generation to operate the dairy. They milk 760 cows on 1,200 acres, raising their young stock and growing forages for the herd.
• Doug Harbach, Clinton County.
o Harbach is the dairy operations manager at Schrack Farms, his family’s multi-generational dairy near Loganton, Clinton County. A 2001 graduate of Cornell University, he worked in dairy nutrition and herd management before returning to the family farm in 2007. Schrack Farms has 27 full-time employees, 1,250 dairy cows and 1,000 replacement heifers. Harbach previously served as the county director to the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and is currently the Pennsyvlvania Dairy Promotion Program director.
The Dairy Future Commission was established as part of a comprehensive package of bills to support the state’s agriculture industry. The commission is made up of lawmakers, agriculture officials, farmers and other industry experts and will review and make recommendations to promote the state’s dairy industry.
