HARRISBURG – On Oct. 29, the governor signed legislation sponsored by Rep. David Maloney Sr. (R-Berks) to fly the POW/MIA flag over all state-owned buildings and properties. The state has had two months to prepare to enact this law, yet the State Capitol remains void of the flag’s presence. Maloney today issued the following statement:
“It has been a very difficult year for Americans, and in Pennsylvania in particular. As our Founding Fathers pointed out many times and in many ways: the safety, freedoms and liberties we cherish must consistently be upheld and defended if we are to pass them on to the next generation. And as I have stated many times, we need to remember those precious rights are defended by volunteers.
“On Sunday, Dec. 27, my legislation,
Act 81 of 2020, authorizing the display of the POW/MIA flag at state buildings and on state property took effect. What better way to begin the New Year than by recognizing and remembering the citizens who volunteered to go into harms’ way, to go to war on our behalf, but never came home?
“My motivation for championing this new law follows the same path as my legislation that would designate Sept. 27 of each year as ‘First Responders Day’ in Pennsylvania to honor the men and women on the front lines who sacrifice so much to protect the lives and property of others.
“Our freedom is not free, and our safety ought not be taken for granted. There are those among us who aspire to causes bigger than themselves to provide us with both. Sadly, in the past year this freedom and safety has been challenged and questioned by those who neither seek to preserve safety and freedom nor honor those who do.
“Let’s change that in 2021.”
