HARRISBURG ¬– In response to Gov. Tom Wolf’s budget proposal, which includes a 46% hike in the Personal Income Tax, Rep. Jesse Topper (R-Bedford/Franklin/Fulton) issued the following statement:
“As our economy attempts to rebound from this challenging year, the last idea we should be considering is a massive tax increase. Unemployment remains high and Pennsylvania’s tax base continues to shrink, so our only option to increase revenue is to increase productivity by fully re-opening our economy.
“I also find it alarming that the governor’s tax increase would do even more harm to the businesses that were hit the hardest by the pandemic as many of our small businesses in the Commonwealth pay the Personal Income Tax instead of the Corporate Net Income Tax. These are the same businesses the governor forcibly closed last year while big-box stores were allowed to remain open.
“The governor is proposing a large increase in education funding, however, the best thing we can do for our students at this time is get them back in the classroom for face-to-face instruction. That should be the focus of our time and resources in regard to education. I look forward to working with the Appropriations Committee through our hearings as we attempt to develop a realistic budget that moves Pennsylvania forward from these dark days.”
