HARRISBURG – Speaker Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) released the following statement calling on the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) and the state-related universities of Penn State, Pitt, Temple and Lincoln to hold the line on tuition and room and board levels for Pennsylvania students in light of the funding increases passed by the House:

“After the House passed a 3 percent increase in state funding for the state-related universities and a 3.3 percent increase in funding for PASSHE, school officials should make a commitment to not increase tuition and room and board for our Pennsylvania students attending these institutions for the 2018-19 school year. The increased state funding should solely be used to make higher education more affordable for Pennsylvania students. Again, no increases in tuition or room and board for Pennsylvania students!

“When the PASSHE Board of Governors meets to plan tuition for the new school year within the next couple of weeks, I will be advocating for no increases in tuition and room and board to help Pennsylvania families better afford college.”

Turzai, who was recently named to the PASSHE Board of Governors, said he will use his position to push to ensure PASSHE schools maintain level tuition.
