Clymer Introduces Legislation to Establish and Advertise National Human Trafficking Resource Hotline in PA
7/28/2010

State Rep. Paul Clymer (R-Bucks) has introduced legislation to establish and advertise a National Human Trafficking Resource Hotline in the Commonwealth in order to help those in the state who may be trapped by this deplorable crime.

Victims of human trafficking are people forced or coerced into labor or sexual exploitation. It is the second largest criminal industry in the world, with an estimated 27 million people in modern-day slavery around the world.

“An initiative called the Polaris Project is working to bring attention the plight of those caught in the web of human trafficking and needing assistance to escape,” said Clymer. “My legislation would create and advertise a National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline within the Commonwealth that victims, as well as law enforcement or those with information about this crime, can call.”

The hotline, which is operated by Polaris Project, is a national, 24-hour, seven-day-a-week, toll-free call center that provides callers with a range of services including victim assistance through urgent and non-urgent referrals within the anti-trafficking and related fields; tip reporting; and comprehensive resources and technical assistance for the anti-trafficking field and those who wish to get involved.

“Human trafficking doesn’t just take place in foreign countries; it is happening right here in America every day,” said Clymer. “It is time we step up and start trying to providing help for those who have been victimized by this crime.”

House Bill 13 is currently before the House Labor Relations Committee.
