Chairman Saylor Disappointed in PASSHE Tuition Increase
HARRISBURG – House Appropriations Chairman Stan Saylor (R-York) issued the following statement on the decision by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) to raise in-state tuition by 2.99 percent for the 2018-19 school year.
“With inclusion in the budget of an additional $15 million for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, it is absolutely insulting to the students at these universities for the Board of Governors to raise tuition. The General Assembly gave PASSHE additional state support to prevent a tuition increase. Instead of prioritizing the students, the governor and his board appointees chose to once again put the union faculty first. I want to thank the minority of board members, like Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny), who voted against the unwarranted tuition increase.
“The PASSHE system is under a tremendous weight because of the burdensome contract the governor entered into with the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculty (APSCUF) union employees. This contract will continue to put a greater burden on our students and our taxpayers in future years. Now is the time to look at real reform when it comes to PASSHE. We cannot keep increasing tuition and throwing money at a problem without addressing the underlying causes.”
The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education is made up of Bloomsburg University, California University of Pennsylvania, Cheyney University, Clarion University, East Stroudsburg University, Edinboro University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Kutztown University, Lock Haven University, Mansfield University, Millersville University, Shippensburg University, Slippery Rock University and West Chester University.
