Brown Appointed to State Board of Education’s Data Collection Reduction Advisory Committee
HARRISBURG – As a member of the House Education Committee, Rep. Rosemary M. Brown (R-Monroe/Pike) has been selected to serve as a member of the State Board of Education’s Data Collection Reduction Advisory Committee. The advisory committee will consult with the board to study and to make recommendations related to public school entity data collection requirements.
“As a member of this committee, I am interested in working to ensure the Department of Education (PDE) identifies and suspends all unnecessary reporting mandates on public schools,” Brown said. “Schools are required to make frequent reports to PDE; however, many of them are never used, are duplicative or are otherwise unnecessary. It is my hope that this committee, comprised of public school business managers, members from the House and Senate Education committees and citizens of the Commonwealth, can identify which reports are no longer necessary.”
This advisory committee was established through Act 86 of 2016, which ultimately included language from
House Bill 1112, which Brown sponsored. Among several other things, this law requires the State Board of Education to establish an advisory committee for the purpose of identifying data collection requirements on public schools that are redundant, overly burdensome or no longer necessary, and issue a report of its findings and recommendations. It also requires PDE to terminate all data collection requirements so identified that are not required by statute or regulation.
“Some of the areas these reports cover include finance, human resources, food services, transportation, child accounting, athletics, health and special education,” Brown explained. “My goal is to create efficiency, as well as accountable reporting within our public schools, charter schools and area vocational-technical schools.”
The committee’s first meeting was held via conference call on Aug. 25, and additional meetings will be held as necessary throughout the fall.
