Quigley Pleased Budget Balances without Increases in Broad-based Taxes
HARRISBURG – Rep. Tom Quigley (R-Montgomery) today joined many other members of the General Assembly in putting together a revenue package to fund the needs of the Commonwealth and avoiding a repeat of last year’s extended budget debacle.
“The bipartisan cooperation, responsible for this year’s budget success, is a vast improvement compared to last year’s climate in Harrisburg. I am pleased that the best interests of taxpayers prevailed; the budget package does not include an increase in income or sales taxes,” Quigley said.
Without ill effects caused by continuing to operate the Commonwealth absent a state budget, this year’s plan will dedicate more money to local school districts due to the implementation of the fair funding formula. The record investments for school districts below include funding for basic and special education as well as Ready-to-Learn Block Grants:
• Perkiomen Valley: $8.9 million
• Pottsgrove: $10.2 million
• Pottstown: $13 million
• Spring-Ford Area: $12.4 million
To fund education and other important initiatives in Pennsylvania, the budget includes revenue from tobacco products and internet gaming. The package also includes a tax amnesty program to encourage delinquent taxpayers to pay their owed taxes.
The budget package is currently awaiting Gov. Tom Wolf’s signature.
