Lewis Commends Budget’s Education Funding Increases
HARRISBURG – State Rep. Harry Lewis Jr. (R-Chester) applauds the passage of the state budget, which would spend $31.55 billion without any broad-based taxes. The budget includes $245 million in additional educational funding.
“As someone with an extensive background in education – having taught and coached young adults for four decades – I know how important it is to provide a competitive education for our children,” Lewis said. “I am proud to say that this budget includes the money necessary to educate in a way that acknowledges the changes of our society, technologically, socially and financially.”
Basic education funding will receive a $200 million increase, Pre-K Counts a $25 million increase and special education a $20 million increase.
“School districts in the 74th Legislative District will see healthy increases as a result of this budget. Local students will certainly get their share of funding – nearly $1.5 million, in fact,” Lewis said.
Under the budget passed by the House, school districts would see the following increases:
• Coatesville Area: $743,150 (3.1 percent increase)
• Downingtown Area: $475,603 (3.4 percent increase)
• Octorara Area: $230,636 (3.9 percent increase)
“Today’s bipartisan support of the budget gives me the hope that the General Assembly and Gov. Tom Wolf will be able to work together for the good of all in a much timelier manner,” Lewis said. “Both parties have been working cooperatively, and I am dedicated to maintaining that spirit of camaraderie.”
