Millard Supports Responsible, Bipartisan Budget
HARRISBURG –Today, Rep. David Millard (R-Berwick) joined a majority of his colleagues in the House of Representatives in supporting a $31.55 billion state budget. The on-time, bipartisan spending plan includes historic state funding for education and provides for a conservative, overall increase without any broad-based tax increases.
Millard issued this statement in support of the budget compromise:
“At the beginning of this year’s budget process, Gov. Tom Wolf asked for billions in new taxes on working Pennsylvanians and small businesses. I am pleased that the plan endorsed today by both Republicans and Democrats, increases funding for education and adequately funds the core functions of government without relying on any of his massive tax increases.
“The budget invests $245 million in new education funding, bringing the total state dollars for education to the highest amount in state history. The budget also earmarks an additional $345 million to help reduce the state’s pension debt, and includes $15 million to address the state’s drug epidemic, $11 million in additional funding for veterans’ homes, and funding for the training of 180 additional state troopers.
“This spending plan was a true bipartisan effort. Of course, with any compromise, you give and you take, but after last year’s difficult impasse, I am encouraged to see members from both sides of the aisle working together.
“As state representative, I have an obligation to be a good steward of taxpayer dollars, and I take that responsibility seriously. I believe the on-time, balanced budget approved today fulfills our financial obligations, while protecting hard-working taxpayers and slowing down the growth and the cost of government.”
