Everett Lauds Bipartisan Actions on Pennsylvania Opioid Crisis
6/23/2016
HARRISBURG – Rep. Garth Everett (R-Lycoming/Union) today issued the following statement after joining bipartisan caucus leaders, dozens House colleagues and Gov. Tom Wolf at a press conference in Harrisburg. New steps were revealed to help Pennsylvania deal with the ongoing opioid addiction crisis, including the calling of a special legislative session in September.

“I support these actions put forward by this bipartisan group which shows the strength of resolve we have to tackle this crisis affecting so many of our residents. As treasurer of the Center for Rural Pennsylvania, which has conducted statewide hearings on this issue, these actions will continue efforts that have been already been made and lead to further legislative action by the General Assembly.

“The work done by the House Resolution 659 Task Force and Advisory Committee on Opioid Prescription Drug Proliferation is exemplary and its members deserve a great deal of credit.

“I am pleased that this is a fully bipartisan effort on the part of the Legislature and the governor. This kind of work is what is needed to help our residents, their families and friends who have been touched by this crisis. I applaud Gov. Wolf.

“There will be additional information coming in the near future. I am a member of the Pennsylvania Heroin, Opioid Prevention and Education (PA-HOPE) caucus, which will announce its findings in the next several days.

“Legislation was passed in the House over the past two weeks, dealing with various aspects of the crisis including requiring insurance access to abuse-deterrent drugs, placing limits on patient discharge prescriptions containing opioids, and doctor and pharmacist professional training. Other bills are pending in both legislative chambers.

“I look forward to working with my colleagues and others in the coming months to do our best to aid the people of Pennsylvania to confront this scourge that is here and national in scope.”
