Ryan Implores DOJ to Investigate PA Nursing Home Deaths
7/30/2021
HARRISBURG – Rep. Frank Ryan (R-Lebanon) is calling on the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to reconsider its decision to drop its investigation into COVID-19 related deaths among patients and staff at Pennsylvania nursing homes.

At the height of the pandemic, the majority of deaths attributed to COVID-19 in Pennsylvania were among residents and staff of nursing homes and other senior care facilities. While the Wolf administration was short on details, Ryan and his House and Senate colleagues pieced together information that identified serious problems in Pennsylvania nursing care facilities, particularly among those over age 65 and with comorbidity issues such as diabetes, respiratory illness and obesity.

Upon further investigation, they learned that patients treated in hospitals for COVID-19 were being returned to nursing homes to recover, allowing the virus to spread among this confined population and putting lives at risk.

“These irregularities must be examined,” said Ryan. “Now is not the time for the DOJ to abandon its investigation into what happened in our nursing care facilities. Justice requires us, regardless of political affiliation, to determine what happened to these people. We are trusting our government to do the right thing and provide state lawmakers, survivors and the public with answers.”
