Speaker Applauds Broad, Bipartisan Support for Tobash Amendment on Pension Reform, Urges ‘Yes’ on Final Passage
6/14/2016
HARRISBURG – Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) issued the following statement today in response to a Pennsylvania House vote of 150-41 in favor of an amendment to Senate Bill 1071, otherwise known as the Tobash amendment, which establishes a hybrid retirement benefits plan for future state and school employees.

“Today was a highly encouraging, bipartisan step toward meaningful pension reform. This amendment, establishes, in part, a defined contribution plan for future hires, which is what the private sector has offered since the mid-1990s.

“Further, this amendment protects the benefits earned by current employees and retirees and meets our statutory obligations to the retirement systems.”

Turzai called on House members to vote for the proposal on final consideration tomorrow, which would send the bill back to the Senate.
