Christiana Unveils Two-Step Approach to Property Tax Elimination
6/13/2016
HARRISBURG – Rep. Jim Christiana (R-Beaver/Washington) today unveiled his plan to provide permanent elimination of property taxes in Pennsylvania by next summer. He issued the following statement on his solution to a problem that has confounded the General Assembly for years:

“Since being elected, I’ve had dozens of families in tears in my office because they are about to lose their home because of out-of-control property taxes. We cannot allow this onerous, anti-American tax to burden families any longer.

“On July 1, 2017, House Bill 2145 will abolish property taxes once and for all.
“After the bill is signed into law, then Gov. Tom Wolf and the General Assembly will be forced to come up with a replacement mechanism by reducing expenses, streamlining state government and finding fair alternatives.

“Attempts to eliminate property taxes and replace them within one bill have been unsuccessful and Pennsylvanians are rightfully fed up. A two-step approach will set a finite deadline for property tax elimination and force us to find a funding alternative. I’m not willing to let the replacement mechanism stand in the way of getting something done any longer. The games are up; let’s abolish property taxes by 2017.

“Property tax elimination needed to happen yesterday, especially for our seniors on fixed incomes. I believe a two-step process will be our most successful option for getting this done. The state of Michigan successfully eliminated property taxes in a similar two-step approach in 2012.”

House Bill 2145 has been referred to the House Finance Committee.
