House Approves Barrar’s Bill to Reauthorize State Fire and Ambulance Grant Program
HARRISBURG – The House unanimously approved legislation sponsored by Rep. Steve Barrar (R-Chester/Delaware) which will reauthorize the soon-to-expire State Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Grant Program through June 30, 2020.
“Organizations that provide public safety and emergency services for all Commonwealth citizens continue to face financial struggles associated with increased costs of essential equipment,” Barrar said. “Chicken barbeques, pancake breakfasts and raffles are often necessary and sometimes the only way to fill the budget gaps. This program both serves and assists those fire and ambulance organizations.”
House Bill 1877 would not only reauthorize the grant program, but it also would add career EMS companies as eligible recipients if they are designated as a municipality’s primary EMS provider.
Through the State Fire and EMS Grant Program, fire and ambulance companies receive a boost for the purchase of turnout gear, apparatus and other items necessary to protect Pennsylvania’s citizens.
“The members of the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee worked diligently on behalf of Pennsylvania’s first responders, and today the House supported that effort to drive funding out to our firefighters and EMS providers as they carry out the ever-important mission of public safety,” Barrar said. “I thank everyone for their support of the bill and the dedicated community it would benefit. Our first responders deserve our sincere gratitude and support for the services they provide this great Commonwealth on a daily basis.”
As House Bill 1877 has passed in the House, it now advances to the Senate for consideration.
