State House Sends Gillespie Tourism Promotion Bill to Governor’s Desk
4/13/2016
HARRISBURG – With significant bipartisan support, the state House on Tuesday sent to Gov. Tom Wolf’s desk legislation authored by state Rep. Keith Gillespie (R-Hellam) that would give York County commissioners a key tool they and county tourism officials have requested in the effort to further promote local destinations and attractions.

“This legislation is something for which our county commissioners have been asking for quite some time,” Gillespie said. “House Bill 794 would provide a tool they can use to help the local tourism industry be more competitive in showcasing the many reasons why York County is a great tourist destination.”

House Bill 794 would give 54 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, including York County, the option to increase their maximum hotel room tax from 3 percent to 5 percent. The legislation will fill a funding gap and bring York County in line with its Adams, Dauphin and Lancaster County neighbors, whose hotel tax rate is already at 5 percent.

“I want to thank Sen. Scott Wagner (R-York) for his help in getting this bill through the state Senate, as well as York County Convention and Visitors Bureau President Anne Druck for all her hard work on the ground in demonstrating the need for this legislation,” added Gillespie. “Rep. Kevin Schreiber (D-York) was also a tremendous ally in obtaining support from the other side of the aisle.”

“This is an incredible accomplishment after many years of work at the request of our tourism industry and our community at large,” Schreiber said. “This will provide substantial new dollars to invest directly back into this all important tourism industry in York County. A great bipartisan effort was accomplished this week and I am grateful to the York delegation and Rep. Gillespie.”
