Medical Marijuana Bill Lacks Foresight, Says Heffley
3/16/2016
HARRISBURG – Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon) issued the following statement after the House voted to pass legislation to legalize medical marijuana in Pennsylvania:

“I could not support passage of Senate Bill 3 in its current form, because it is too broad-based and opens the door to full legalization. While I am compassionate and supportive of Pennsylvanians who suffer from conditions that may be eased by medical marijuana, I do not think today’s vote is the solution.

“We need to expand access to research to understand the effects of this drug and those who may benefit from medical marijuana. I supported amendments that would have granted access to children with seizures and cancer patients to programs at our state universities and hospitals.

“Many unanswered questions remain about the efficacy of medical marijuana, and I do not want to be responsible for improving access to a Schedule 1 illegal drug, without first addressing the opioid and heroin epidemic that is destroying families and killing 2,500 people per year in Pennsylvania.”
