Nesbit Disappointed with Governor’s Continuous Call for Higher Taxes
2/9/2016
HARRISBURG – Rep. Tedd Nesbit (R-Mercer/Butler) expressed disappointment today after Gov. Tom Wolf presented his budget proposal for the 2016-17 fiscal year.

In total, Wolf presented a nearly $33.2 billion budget that would rely on $2.7 billion in tax increases, including an 11 percent increase in the income tax – which would be retroactive – and one of the highest severance tax rates in the nation.

“I am disappointed that the governor has chosen to continue the gridlock that hurt our constituents last year,” Nesbit said. “I was hoping that he would take an opportunity to tone down the rhetoric and lead us toward a consensus. Sadly, that wasn’t the message of today’s address.”

Instead, Nesbit reported, the governor refuses to understand the financial issues faced by families, individuals and senior citizens in the 8th District in Mercer and Butler counties. Local residents already facing tight family budgets cannot afford the type of spending proposed by the governor.

“I continue to believe that tax increases should be the last resort,” Nesbit continued. “We should not be increasing state spending while at the same time arguing that there is a ‘structural deficit.’ My hope is that we can convince the governor to compromise on his stance on broad-based tax increases and properly address the costs that are driving up the cost of state government. The taxpayers of Pennsylvania deserve to know their money is being spent wisely, and this budget should reflect that.”
