Quigley Votes to End Budget Impasse, Dedicate Record Funding to Education
HARRISBURG – Rep. Tom Quigley (R-Montgomery) today voted in favor of a fiscally responsible state budget that does not incorporate broad-based tax increases or an expansion of the sales tax.
House Bill 1460 includes record education investments.
“This prudent proposal balances the needs of the Commonwealth with citizens’ ability to pay,” Quigley said. “It protects everyone by providing vital services without necessitating an enormous tax package.”
In addition to funding core government responsibilities, a record $10.7 billion would be allocated for education.
“More importantly, this budget would get our government running again. It provides the important opportunity to fully serve citizens, which sadly has not been done in the last six months,” Quigley said. “This budget will take the unbearable burden off of the agencies and non-profits that have been working so hard to make the lack of funding unnoticeable to everyone they serve.”
The original budget proposal was presented to the governor on June 30, and an unsuccessful budget override vote was cast in August. Since then, numerous budget bills have been considered.
Gov. Tom Wolf’s proposal included a $4.7 billion tax package comprised largely of a Personal Income Tax increase as well as a sales tax increase and broadening.
