Barrar Names Dec. 8 National Guard Day in the Commonwealth
HARRISBURG – Rep. Steve Barrar (R-Chester/Delaware), majority chairman of the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, today saluted Adj. Gen. Jim Joseph and all members of the Pennsylvania National Guard when he named Dec. 8 National Guard Day in the Commonwealth.
“Our Pennsylvania National Guard has selflessly served the Commonwealth for 260 years, acting in the most devastating circumstances both at home and abroad,” Barrar said. “It’s an honor to recognize the many men and women of the Guard for their dedicated service and commend them for the outstanding performance of their duties.”
In times of war, national or state emergencies, or in support of any military operation worldwide, the president may mobilize units of the National Guard into active federal service. Pennsylvania’s National Guard soldiers and airman have served at home and abroad in every war; they have responded to floods, blizzards and other extreme weather.
“While it is easy to take their dedication for granted, we must make every effort – today and always – to remain humbled by the service they have provided,” Barrar said.
A volunteer militia was created by the General Assembly on Nov. 25, 1755, to better order and regulate citizens who wanted to unite within the Commonwealth for military purposes. This militia laid the legal foundation for the Pennsylvania National Guard.
