Bipartisan Votes Defeats Wolf Tax Proposal, Says Sonney
HARRISBURG – State Rep. Curt Sonney (R-Harborcreek) joined the majority of House members today in voting down Gov. Tom Wolf’s tax package by a 127-73 vote. The amendment to House Bill 283 would have increased the Personal Income Tax (PIT) from 3.07 percent to 3.57 percent, imposed a 3.5 percent severance tax on natural gas drillers and expanded the state’s existing Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program.
Sonney issued the following statement after the vote:
“Today I joined colleagues from both sides of the aisle in saying no to what would have been the largest tax increase in Pennsylvania history. While this proposal was scaled back significantly from the tax package we considered on June 1, the resulting vote clearly demonstrates the lack of an appetite in the Legislature for this type of fiscal approach.
“Everything from a bridge naming to an appropriations bill must obtain a majority of votes in the House (a minimum of 102), a majority of votes in the Senate (a minimum of 26) and one governor’s signature in order to become law. It is now incumbent on Gov. Wolf to come to the negotiating table with a proposal that has the necessary votes to get to his desk. I look forward to working with him in pursuit of that legislation.”
Questions about this or any legislative issues may be directed to Sonney’s Corry office at (814) 664-9126, or his Harborcreek office at (814) 897-2080.
