Barrar Urges Gov. Wolf to Provide for the Safety of PA’s National Guard
7/22/2015
HARRISBURG – Following the tragic deaths of five military personnel at two military installations in Tennessee last week, Rep. Steve Barrar (R-Chester/Delaware) urges Gov. Tom Wolf to issue an executive order to allow Pennsylvania National Guard recruiters and personnel to carry firearms in the performance of their duties.

Barrar also requests that Adj. Gen. Jim Joseph authorize the Pennsylvania National Guard recruiters to carry firearms, by making such firearms eligible under “uniform of the day” practices and policies.

“These men and women are trained and capable to prevent tragic situations like the one in Tennessee; now we just need the governor to give them permission to do it,” Barrar said. “Allowing our guardsmen to protect themselves and others at home is the right thing to do.”

Barrar authored a letter to the governor which requested this executive action on this important matter. In bipartisan support, his letter garnered the signatures of more than 100 members of the House of Representatives.

He is also working to address the federal aspects of this important issue via a House resolution sponsored by Rep. Martina White (R-Philadelphia).

Currently, six state governors have authorized similar practices since the tragic deaths last week, and more governors are expected to issue similar executive orders.
