Tax Increases Would Result from Shapiro Fantasy Budget, O’Neal Says
HARRISBURG – Rep. Tim O’Neal (R-Washington) today issued the following statement in response to Gov. Josh Shapiro’s over $48 billion fiscal year 2024-25 budget:
“The budget offered today by Gov. Josh Shapiro is more of the same – a long list of wants and dreams, light on details and fiscally bankrupting. It’s a tax and spending agenda that brings California politics to Pennsylvania. This is no way to run the Commonwealth. In its mid-year update, the Independent Fiscal Office recently predicted a $3 billion budget deficit in two years.
“We should not be looking at adding new programs, but instead making sure we have the money to pay for existing expenditures. Pennsylvania families do not manifest into existence money in order to pay for all their wants. Instead, they take a hard look at their budget and make prudent decisions, just like state government should.
“If we throw responsible decision-making out the door, and just fulfill all of the governor’s dreams and presidential campaign ambitions, hardworking Pennsylvanians will have to dig deeper into their pockets to pay higher taxes. I hear from my constituents every day that they are struggling due to inflation. I remain committed to not place a larger fiscal burden on them in order for the governor to realize his higher political aspirations. The governor claims he wants to get stuff done. If he was sincere about that, he would have put forth a legitimate proposal, not empty promises for campaign consultants.”
