Cook: Governor’s Budget Proposal Unaffordable, Irresponsible
2/6/2024
HARRISBURG – Rep. Bud Cook (R-Greene/Washington) issued the following statement in response to Gov. Josh Shapiro’s $48.3 billion budget proposal for the 2024-25 fiscal year:

“At a time when so many people are struggling with inflation, the governor is seeking to ‘inflate’ the cost of government by increasing state spending more than 8%, or $3.7 billion, over the current fiscal year. He is continuing to spend down state reserves and will fully deplete them in the next 3-4 years. This is not responsible budgeting and sets us up for a significant tax increase in the near future, which is something our individuals, families and employers simply cannot afford.

“Fortunately, the governor’s budget plan is simply a starting point for negotiations that will take place over the next few months. We will look at the initiatives he is proposing and prioritize funding to ensure we are living within our means. My goal is to ensure the state is meeting its commitments while being mindful of the taxpayers who must pay the bills.”
