Stephens Applauds ‘Kids Helping Kids’ with Keith Valley Challenge Day Resolution
2/4/2015
HARRISBURG—Rep. Todd Stephens (R-Montgomery) sponsored a resolution this week recognizing students at Keith Valley Middle School for participating in the Keith Valley Challenge and will visit the event to congratulate the students.

The event, a 17-hour, non-stop floor hockey marathon, will take place Friday, Feb. 6, starting at 2 p.m., and ending Saturday, Feb. 7, at 7 a.m. The funds raised will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“This is a wonderful event that teaches kids about the importance of giving back while benefitting those who need our help,” Stephens said.

This week, the House passed Stephens’ House Resolution 9 to commemorate Feb. 6 as Keith Valley Challenge Day in Pennsylvania.

In 1977, Keith Valley Middle School held a floor hockey marathon to honor the memory of Billy Whitehead, an eighth-grade student who passed away due to a rare congenital heart defect. In his memory, the staff and eighth-graders at the school began holding the ‘Billy Whitehead Marathon’ and pledged to raise money on a yearly basis for St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.

The marathon was renamed “The Keith Valley Challenge” in 1981 and students began to donate funds raised to additional charities.

Last year’s event raised more than $58,000. Over the last 38 years, Keith Valley students have raised and donated more than $890,000 to 14 charities such as the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, the ALS Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House.
