Klunk Selected to Serve on Four Standing House Committees in First Term
HARRISBURG — State Rep. Kate Klunk (R-York) today announced she has been appointed to serve on the House Aging and Older Adult Services, Children and Youth, Gaming Oversight, and Urban Affairs committees for the 2015-16 legislative session. Earlier this month, Klunk began serving her first term in the Pennsylvania General Assembly.
“These assignments are excellent opportunities for me to contribute to important matters of public policy, particularly with regard to the needs of the people I represent in the 169th District,” Klunk said. “Before any bill comes to the House floor, it must be reviewed and refined at the committee level. This is where the real legwork is done in the legislative process.”
Klunk noted she is particularly pleased with her appointments to the House Aging and Older Adult Services and Children and Youth committees. The Aging and Older Adult Services Committee deals with long-term care, elder abuse, Area Agencies on Aging, programs for senior citizens, the Pennsylvania Lottery, and other issues affecting those over the age of 60. The Children and Youth Committee handles legislation that addresses Pennsylvanians under the age of 18, including day care, foster care, family law, and children’s health issues.
“I have always been a staunch advocate for both children and seniors, and I look forward to formulating policies to assist Pennsylvania’s citizens during the most vulnerable periods of their lives,” Klunk said.
The Gaming Oversight Committee oversees slot machine gaming, bingo, small games of chance, amusement laws and table games in Pennsylvania. In addition to its legislative responsibilities, the committee has oversight of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board and aspects that deal with gaming within the Department of Revenue, the Office of Attorney General and the Pennsylvania State Police. Although York County does not have any casinos, many veterans and civic organizations depend upon the modest revenues generated by small games of chance.
“From small games of chance to table games and slot machines, the gaming industry in Pennsylvania must be held to the highest standards, and this committee seeks to ensure that integrity,” Klunk said. “For local residents, they want to make sure that as much revenue as possible is generated for property tax relief, and that is a major objective of this committee.”
As a member of the Urban Affairs Committee, Klunk will be involved in issues dealing with housing, urban redevelopment, economic development, land use planning and zoning, growth management, infrastructure financing and city services such as police, fire, sewage and water, among others. Klunk said she is pleased to be able to bring the perspective of someone who lives outside Pennsylvania’s major cities to the panel.
In addition to her standing committee assignments, Klunk will serve as a deputy chair to the House Majority Policy Committee, which is tasked with gathering feedback from key stakeholders across the state on some of the most important policy issues facing the Commonwealth.
