Ortitay Announces Committee Appointments
1/22/2015
HARRISBURG— Rep. Jason Ortitay (R-Washington/Allegheny) has been appointed to serve on the following four standing committees for the 2015-16 legislative session: Aging and Older Adult Services, Human Services, Labor and Industry, and Tourism and Recreational Development.

“Committee work is a necessary and important step in the process of moving legislation to the House floor for consideration,” Ortitay said. “I am anxious to get to work on many important issues facing Pennsylvanians.”

Within the legislative process, all bills are first sent to and reviewed by committees. During the committee process, amendments can be offered, discussions on the bills take place and sometimes public or informational hearings are held to gather more information on a legislative issue before a vote is taken on whether or not to advance a bill for a vote before the full House.

The Aging and Older Adult Services Committee focuses on issues facing older Pennsylvanians and the programs and services available to assist them, such as PACE/PACENET, senior transportation, Property Tax and Rent Rebate, elder abuse and protective services, and long-term care services.

Human Services has legislative oversight of several programs under the state departments of Drug and Alcohol Programs, Health, and Human Services, including programs that assist individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities, along with those needing mental health services and drug and alcohol treatment.

The legislative issues assigned to the Labor and Industry Committee include unemployment compensation, workers’ compensation, minimum wage, prevailing wage, public employee labor relations, apprenticeship and job training, and vocational rehabilitation.

The Tourism and Recreational Development Committee legislates state tourism promotion and visitor bureaus, rural tourism programs, heritage parks, museum and historic site funding, film industry-related issues and state park recreational activities.

“My committee assignments will give me greater access to information and with that, greater ability to assist and protect Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable populations, talented workforce and priceless heritage.”
