Gillen Pleased with His Four House Committee Assignments
HARRISBURG – State Rep. Mark Gillen (R-Berks/Lancaster) today in Harrisburg was pleased to be assigned to serve on four committees in the state House that will deal with issues important to students, teachers, military veterans, emergency responders, older residents and working Pennsylvanians.
“I’m looking forward to working on an array of issues that will have implications for various groups and individuals in Berks and Lancaster counties,” Gillen said.
As an Act 48-certified teacher and the former educational director of the Salt and Light Foundation, Gillen will bring real-world experience to his assignment as a member on the House Education Committee.
Gillen also has been instrumental in efforts to replace the existing school district property tax with a broader and fairer system of revenue streams.
“The property tax system is a broken funding mechanism that is beyond repair and must be replaced to provide fairness for homeowners and Pennsylvania students,” Gillen said.
Gillen also will serve on the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee. He has been a vocal supporter of veteran initiatives and is a licensed emergency medical technician.
“I have the deepest respect for our men and women who served in the military and defended our nation,” Gillen said. “Our emergency responders are brave, dedicated people who are committed to serving others.”
Gillen also will serve on the Aging and Older Adult Services Committee and the Labor and Industry Committee during the 2015-16 legislative session.
“The Commonwealth provides a variety of programs and services to benefit older Pennsylvanians and I look forward to working on legislation to review and improve those offerings,” Gillen said. “We also must work to adopt policies that balance the needs of workers and employers to generate an environment of economic growth in Pennsylvania.”
