Charlton Backs Bill to Create Grant Program to Support Research on Spinal Cord Injuries
HARRISBURG—Rep. Alex Charlton (R-Delaware) joined a bipartisan majority of his House colleagues in passing
Senate Bill 31 to create a research grant program aimed at discovering new and innovative treatments and rehabilitative efforts for spinal cord disabilities.
“This is an important step forward in helping people with spinal cord disabilities by dedicating $1 million for research to help individuals live a more vital life,” Charlton said.
Senate Bill 31 amends the Tobacco Settlement Act to create the Spinal Cord Injury Research Grant Program within the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
Under the bill, funds from the Health Research Program under the Tobacco Settlement Act will be appropriated to develop research projects regarding spinal cord injuries and related infrastructure by eligible applicants. It may also be used to conduct peer reviews and performance reviews.
Pennsylvania would join approximately 11 other states in using such a tool in supporting pioneering spinal cord research.
“Pennsylvania leads the nation in medical breakthroughs at our invaluable research universities,” Charlton said. “When the breakthrough comes it will be here. This grant program will fuel the research needed so those with spinal cord disabilities can live fuller lives.”
The bill now goes to the governor for his signature.
