Everett Applauds New Organ Donation Law
10/23/2018
HARRISBURG – Rep. Garth Everett (Lycoming/Union) today applauded the governor’s signing of Act 90 of 2018 (Senate Bill 180), legislation he advocated for which will provide more access to organ and tissue donation.
“Sue and I’s grandson had a heart transplant five years ago, and I have been a big proponent of this bill ever since,” said Everett.

The Donate Life PA Act establishes a comprehensive framework for public education about organ and tissue donations; clarifies the methods for making anatomical donations; and updates the law to reflect the best clinical practices to support anatomical donations for transplantations.

“Our family is incredibly thankful that our grandson was given this gift, and we ask that Pennsylvanians consider signing up as donors on donatelifepa.org to help other families,” said Everett. “I think most people would take the time to fill out the simple form if they knew that 8,000 patients in Pennsylvania are on wait lists right now for life-saving organ transplants. Others are waiting for life-enhancing tissue transplants. With this new law, as education on this issue improves, I think we’ll see this change.”

According to Donate Life Pennsylvania, only 48 percent of Pennsylvanians are registered as organ donors.
