Legislation that would allow students to apply sunscreen and use other sun-protective clothing during school hours or at school sponsored events has been unanimously approved by the Pennsylvania House. Rep. Hal English (R-Allegheny), prime sponsor of House Bill 1228, said his bill is a common-sense measure that would allow students to properly protect themselves from UV radiation while enjoying outdoor activities.

The House Education Committee has approved a bipartisan package of legislation designed to equip students with the technical and career skills they will need to thrive as they enter the workforce. The package of bills is the result of hearings held and data gathered from 2015 to 2016 by the Select Subcommittee on Technical Education and Career Readiness. House Education Committee Chairman Rep. Dave Hickernell (R-Lancaster, Dauphin) said the legislative package is designed to promote technical education options for students and fight the perception that those who wish to attend a trade school are not reaching their potential by eschewing a university education.

State legislators partnered with representatives from the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau Tuesday in Harrisburg to emphasize the need to increase high-speed internet access for rural residents of the Commonwealth. Chairman of the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, Rep. Martin Causer (Cameron/McKean/Potter) and Rep. Kristin Phillips-Hill (R-York) discussed the need for improved broadband services for the agriculture community, and a package of legislation aimed at encouraging a faster roll-out of high speed internet services in the underserved rural areas of the Commonwealth.
