Legislation to allow Pennsylvania public schools to display America’s national motto, “In God We Trust,” was approved Monday by the state House by a resounding bipartisan margin of 179-20. Prime sponsor Rep. Cris Dush (R-Jefferson & Indiana) said the bill would help to ensure future generations of Pennsylvania students will have the opportunity to see the national motto, which is part of the history and heritage of the United States, displayed in our public schools.

Legislation designed to improve the knowledge of history and civics in the Commonwealth was the topic of a press conference held in Harrisburg on Monday. Rep. Karen Boback (R-Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wyoming) is the co-sponsor of House Bill 1858, which would require high school students to pass a test on basic facts of U.S. history and civics taken from the United States Citizenship Civics Test – the same test all immigrants applying for U.S. citizenship must pass.

Rep. David Parker (R-Monroe) spoke in support of the adoption of a new funding formula for the distribution of basic education dollars in Pennsylvania at a press conference held in Harrisburg recently by the Citizens for Fair School Funding. Parker said that the proposal put forth by the bipartisan Basic Education Funding Commission would be more equitable for students statewide, and would bring an end to a cycle of underfunding for local schools.
