HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania House of Representatives today unanimously approved legislation authored by Rep. Judy Ward (R-Blair) to allow motorcycles to display a Purple Heart/Combat Wounded Veteran registration plate, if the owner is a recipient of the military decoration.
“Currently, the plate is only available for passenger cars or trucks,” said Ward. “But veterans who have earned these designations should also be able to display them with pride on their motorcycle. This is just one more small way we can honor our veterans who gave so much in service to their country.”
The Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of the Armed Forces of the United States who, while serving under competent authority in any capacity with one of the U.S. Armed Services after April 5, 1917, has been wounded or killed.
“A constituent of mine who was wounded in action in Vietnam in 1967 is actually the one who came to me with the idea and asked that I introduce this legislation so he may display the plate on his motorcycle ‘while he is still young enough to ride,’” said Ward.
The current fee is $11 for a passenger car or truck Purple Heart registration plate. For more information about currently available military registration plates, go to www.dmv.pa.gov and then go to “Vehicle Services” at the top of the page and click on “Registration Plates.”
House Bill 1294 now goes to the state Senate for consideration.
