HARRISBURG – Rep. Justin Walsh (R-Westmoreland) today introduced legislation to bring further accountability to welfare benefits.

“Assistance benefits are intended to help individuals and families in need,” Walsh said. “We have reports of cases where the benefits have not been used until several months after they become available, questioning the validity of their need. This is not fair to those truly in need and can give rise to fraudulent usage by unauthorized individuals. My bill would ensure assistance is available to those most in need and reduce waste, fraud and abuse of benefits.”

House Bill 1618 would require any welfare assistance not used within six months to be forfeited back to the government.

The 58th Legislative District in Westmoreland County includes Jeannette and Monessen cities, as well as East Huntingdon (part), Hempfield (part), Rostraver, Sewickley and South Huntingdon townships. Also, the district encompasses the boroughs of Adamsburg, Arona, Madison, Mount Pleasant, North Belle Vernon, Penn, Smithton, Sutersville and West Newton.
