HARRISBURG - Legislation introduced by Rep. Rick Saccone (R-Allegheny/Washington) which would protect the honor and valor of America’s veterans this week overwhelmingly passed the Senate 49-0.

“For one to falsely identify themselves as a veteran by wearing decorations they did not earn or service medals with the intention to obtain money or property is truly an insult and discredit to the men and women who have selflessly sacrificed their lives on the battlefield,” said Saccone. “Our men and women of the armed forces and their families deserve the utmost respect and praise, and criminals who disguise themselves as illegitimate veterans demean our true American heroes.”

House Bill 168 would prohibit anyone to economically benefit from lying about military service or receiving decorations without merit. Saccone, an Air Force veteran, insists this bill would help preserve the reputation of legitimate veterans.

“Some people have actually tried to make money by falsely claiming veteran status,” said Saccone. “They will now be brought to account.”

The bill now heads to Gov. Tom Wolf for his signature.
